3Shetlanders Urged to Open Doors for Tall ShipsVisitShetland is calling on locals to open their homes to sailing enthusiasts next summer as The Tall Ships Races arrive in Lerwick in July 2011. Renowned for its international following and with just 10 months to go, the race is expected to attract a number of additional visitors to the islands which will create a need for additional accommodation.

19Racing to WorkFor 16 hardy souls Friday’s journey to work will be a little different. Instead of hopping on the bus or into the car, they will be setting off on ‘The Big Commute’ – an offshore yacht race some 775 miles around the top of Scotland, from Edinburgh to Glasgow via Lerwick.

2133 Scottish Trainees are already counting down to The Tall Ships Races 2011The Tall Ships Races 2011, presented by Szczecin, organised by Sail Training International, is exactly one year away from arriving in Lerwick and, already, 33 trainees from the participating Cruise in Company ports, between Greenock and Lerwick, have signed up to take part.

Getting To Shetland
There is a comfortable daily overnight ferry service, on modern ships, between Aberdeen and Lerwick. For full details and bookings visit the Northlink Ferries website.
There are several daily flights from the Scottish mainland. Flight time from Aberdeen is under an hour and, from Inverness, Edinburgh or Glasgow, the journey takes around 90 minutes. Flights also operate, during the summer months, between Bergen (Norway) and Shetland.
