Swan departs for The Tall Ships Races 2011

Shetland’s Sail Training Vessel, Swan, recently set sail from Scalloway en route to Waterford in Ireland ready to embark upon this year’s Tall Ships Races which takes place between 30 June and 8 August.

Swan © Mark Burgess Swan will be participating in all four legs of The Tall Ships Races 2011. Over the duration of the races the crew will be made up of people from Ireland, Orkney, Sweden and, of course, Shetland.

This is a fantastic year for Shetland trainees to sail onboard Swan as not only are they taking part on Shetland's own sailing training vessel but they are also sailing into their home port for the first time since 1999.

Swan was commended for their work and engagement with young people when they were awarded with the National Historic Ships' Flagship Award 2011 earlier this year. They were also praised for their extensive sailing and visiting programme for 2011.

En route to Waterford Swan plans a leisurely cruise to Inverness, then down through the Caledonian Canal, before calling at Oban and on to Bangor. The crew for this leg comes from all over the British Isles with members from Arbroath, Cheshire, Ireland and Shetland.
