Our aim is to host an event that will firmly establish Shetland as a premier sailing destination and showcase Shetland as a unique and memorable tourism and events location. Through hosting The Tall Ships Races, we also aim to build a sustainable legacy for future events and ongoing sail training development in Shetland.

As a seafaring community, Tall Ships have become very special to us and we have fond memories from 1999 when Lerwick last hosted the Tall Ships Races, and annually when we welcome Tall Ships and visiting yachts to our ports.

We are working hard to ensure the best facilities, entertainment and hospitality is available for our visitors. Core event funding has been secured to assist with the delivery of this event from Shetland Islands Council. This core funding is very much appreciated, but an additional £400,000 sponsorship target has been set to fully deliver our event aspirations.

We look forward to engaging with businesses on the opportunities available to support this important international event. If we can provide any information and answer any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Staging an International Event

Hosting The Tall Ships Races is a tremendous undertaking for any island port. We want to make sure that we organise an exceptional event and this will need the help and support of every Shetlander.

  4. Provide opportunities for your employees to become a volunteer or participate as Sail Trainees

Recent Host Ports have calculated that many millions of pounds have been generated into their local economy by The Tall Ships event which also provides excellent opportunities to gain extensive media exposure. For 2011 there are a number of key elements required to deliver the event to crew and visitors such as:

  • Social and cultural activities
  • Showers, toilets and laundry facilities
  • Site infrastructure - barriers, staging and manpower
  • Accommodation and transport for race officials
  • Volunteers
  • Volunteer clothing and catering
  • Corporate signage and printed material

Local sponsorship could be provided through either cash or in-kind to assist in making The Tall Ships Races visit to Shetland a memorable time for crew, visitors and our island community.

As part of the aims of supporting the sustainable development of sail training, a separately constituted body called Sail Training Shetland has been formed with Shetland Tall Ships 2011 Ltd, working in partnership with The Swan Trust and Lerwick Port Authority to deliver sail training opportunities annually to young people in Shetland. If your company is interested in supporting sail training, sponsorship opportunities are available now. Please contact us to discuss further and visit the sail training section on our website for further information and links.
