Captains and Crew will meet a sea of bright yellow when the Tall Ships berth in Lerwick

With over 2,000 crew members expected on Shetland’s shores next Thursday, the task of co-ordinating all of their wants and needs falls to a crack team of over 80 volunteers called Liaison Officers.

Liaison Officer KitWearing their bright yellow shirts, these community members will each be assigned to a ship to provide essential support throughout their visit, liaising closely with the Ships’ captains and making every effort to make the Ships’ visit to Lerwick a success.

The Co-operative Membership is supporting the iconic event with over £6,000 in sponsorship which has included sponsoring the Liaison Officers and volunteers uniforms throughout the event.

Up to 50 volunteers, including staff from the two stores in Lerwick and Brae, have also signed up to help make the event a success.  These volunteers will be easily differentiated from the Liaison Officers as they will be dressed in bright blue polo shirts.

Tor Justad, Co-operative and Membership Officer for Northern Scotland and Islands, said: “This sponsorship fits perfectly with our ethical policy and our theme of inspiring young people and we are delighted to support one of the most important events on Shetland’s calendar in recent years.”
